Siena Chess Club

On Tuesday, 23 July, representatives from the Siena Chess Club attended Chess Victoria Secondary Girls Zonal, at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar (PEGS). A total of forty four Years 7 to 10 students attended, from Lowther Hall Anglican, Siena College, St Aloysius College and PEGS.

The Siena participants were Estelle Jones, Renata Fanthome and Angelina Rodos. The competition was tough but the girls approached the day with enthusiasm and enjoyment. Our single- teamed Siena girls played well, using clever strategies and recalling skills learnt in the weekly Chess Club meetings. The girls seemed very cool, calm and collected. If they were nervous, it was well disguised which is a very important chess strategy.

Angelina achieved a Bronze medal by winning four out of the seven games played and has qualified for the State finals. Renata and Estelle both achieved personal best scores, winning six games between them.

The Siena Chess Club meets every Wednesday at lunchtime in the Learning Centre.  At the meetings, we are very fortunate to have the benefit of learning from Denise, an expert chess player and representative of Dark Horse Chess Coaching.  New players of all skill levels, including absolute beginners, are very welcome to come along!
