Earlier this year, our Year 7 Geography students had the opportunity to prepare entries for the state wide GTAV MapIT! 2022 competition. Three Siena students, Emily S, Alana C and Isla J entered the competition and out of over eight hundred entries received, we are delighted to announce that Emily has been selected as the state winner of the MapIT! 2022 competition.

On Wednesday 30 November, the Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria Inc (GTAV) organised a surprise certificate and prize presentation at Siena College to congratulate Emily. We were joined by Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and GTAV representatives on this special occasion.

Below is a reflection by Emily on her winning entry:

"In this competition, Year 7 students from all around Victoria submitted entries which consisted of a map displaying improvements to the local government area, as well as responses to a series of questions relating to map. The area my map covered was central to Wattle Park and I proposed a total of nine improvements:

  • A primary school on Riversdale Road (near the intersection of Riversdale and Warrigal Road)
  • An IGA supermarket and carpark located on Boisdale Street (parallel to Riversdale Road)
  • A bus line to service the IGA supermarket
  • A secondary school near the southeast of Wattle Park
  • Sport courts on Riversdale Road for the local students
  • An underground train line on Elgar Road
  • Medical facilities on the corner of Elgar and Hamel Street
  • A playground and a neighbourhood house off Elgar Road
  • Pool and gym facility off Erasmus Street

Congratulations to Emily for being the state winner of the MapIT! 2022 competition, the whole Siena community is very proud of you! Special thanks to Head of Humanities, Jessica Sullivan, as well as Humanities teachers, Alan Anderson and Neil Thomas for submitting the competition entries.

The MapIT! 2022 competition is opened to all Year 7 Geography students across Victoria, and is sponsored and overseen by DELWP in conjunction with their 20Min Neighbourhood Team.
