In this episode of SienaCast, Year 9 students Ruby F and Shehrbano J, along with Learning Centre Manager Cherie Bell, interviewed acclaimed author Amy Doak. In a lively and insightful conversation, Amy shares her journey from her career beginnings to her writing passions and gives us a glimpse into what is next on her creative horizon.
The Year 9 English students have been exploring crime and mystery writing, culminating in their analysis of the classic Agatha Christie novel, Murder on the Orient Express. Acclaimed crime and mystery author, Amy Doak visited the Year 9s to discuss the history of the genre, from Christie’s golden age of detective fiction and John Grisham’s legal-heavy mysteries, to modern psychological thrillers. She shared insights on creating a compelling backstory for a suspect, and how to reveal just enough to the reader while preserving the element of surprise when the culprit is unveiled.
Amy also led a workshop for twenty-five students, introducing Knox’s ten rules of detective fiction and giving participants the opportunity to put pen to paper, capturing a moment of fear for a character.
Thank you to the Albertus Magnus Learning Centre staff and the English Faculty for organising this incursion!
