Spotlight on Siena Staff is an ongoing series of short videos and articles capturing the reflections, motivations and advice from some of our amazing Siena College staff. Today, we feature Excellence Awardee (Principal of the Year), Elizabeth Hanney. She reflects on the connections she has made over the years in Catholic Education, and shares with us her thoughts about the future of young people today.

Elizabeth finds it a privilege and a pleasure to be the Principal at Siena College. For her, each day gives witness to a thriving community of learning and growth for students, underpinned by Dominican values and exercised by extraordinary staff. As Principal, Elizabeth is honoured to contribute to the education and formation of young people for our world. A Dominican education is a liberating one; enabling young women to know their gifts, live into their promise, and daring them to do more and be more for our world.

Are there any connections that you have made over the years that have particularly stood out to you?

The connections I have made over many years inspire and sustain me continuously. There are several individuals who stand out during my Catholic Education journey as teacher, leader and principal. These people were, and remain, people I admire; I could look to them to learn, to be challenged, to be encouraged, and to rely on their wisdom. Most of these people have been within Catholic Education and it has been a privilege to know them. Just as I have been supported, I now hope to extend this to the many inspiring leaders currently in our schools, and certainly here at Siena.

How do you feel about the future of young people today?

Catholic Education is a sacred endeavour; we provide incredible opportunities for learning and growth to young people, all in the context of our faith tradition which fosters love, justice, peace and fullness of life for all. On this basis, we have every reason to be filled with hope for the future of young people as they are incredible!
